Lobbying Success!

After lobbying for S 606, we are thrilled to hear that Senator Marcus voted in favor of this bill. This bill will prioritize native plants on highway rights-of-way. Native plants carry many benefits for birds, bees, and butterflies that are an important part of North Carolina’s natural heritage. In addition, native plants will save the state money on roadside maintenance.

Our world is choking on plastic.

Each year, billions of pounds of trash enter the ocean. Plastic specifically is one of the greatest threats to ocean health worldwide. According to Science Magazine, between 4 and 12 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the ocean each year. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch — a massive accumulation of ocean plastic — currently spans an area three times the size of Texas. It's time to take action! Sign the petition to ask major corporations to do their part to ensure their packaging stays out of the oceans.

This is largely in part due to the massive increase in glyphosate or Monsanto's Roundup®. Friends of the Earth Action are on a mission to stop supporting a food system built on this toxic pesticide. To learn more about them and how you can join the fight, check out their website.

The State of Our Air is Worsening

"Few aspects of day-to-day life are easier to take for granted than the air we breathe. Yet for residents in many cities across the United States, dirty air is becoming a new normal as climate change exacerbates poor air quality, with dire consequences for the most vulnerable residents, according to the American Lung Association’s 20th-annual State of the Air report."

Electrifying Your Home Is Good for You

Natural gas—once hailed as a less-polluting replacement for coal—is still a climate pollutant. It was responsible for 10 percent of US emissions in 2017, according to the EPA. That figure may be a conservative estimate, since a significant amount of gas leaks into the atmosphere during its production and delivery.

This long-term strategic urban forest master plan is a logical next step for Charlotte, following an early development of a tree protection ordinance, appointment of a city tree advisory committee, the city council's 2011 adoption of a 50% canopy goal by 2050, and formation of TreesCharlotte in 2012.
